Car rental or taxis in Phuket: which makes sense for your trip?

If your beach, favourite cafe and hotel are close together and you only have a few outings planned, start with taxis. If you expect to travel between areas almost every day and make several stops, compare that with renting a car. We suggest fitting transport around your holiday, not the other way round. A car needn't join you for the entire trip, especially if your main route is breakfast to sun lounger.

Below, we'll look at when each option works and calculate a week's rental using examples from our fleet. No promises that a car is always cheaper: that depends on your route, rental length and the vehicle you actually need.

Which option fits your plans?

You don't have to pick a team for life. Drive a rental during the day and take a taxi in the evening. Equally, a few taxi rides at the start don't stop you renting a car later.

When taxis are enough

If you're staying near your preferred beach and only plan a couple of trips to another area, a car rented for the whole holiday could spend most of it parked. Count those outings in full first: hotel to destination and back, plus any stops in between.

Taxis also make sense when you don't want to drive. After a long flight or when you're very tired, arrange a ride with a driver. If your evening includes alcohol, choose a driver regardless of how much you've already paid for the rental.

Then there's parking. Before booking a car, ask your accommodation to show you the actual space and explain the rules: can you leave the vehicle overnight, and is parking included? “Somewhere nearby” is not yet a parking space.

For a trip with a child, confirm a suitable child seat in advance. With lots of luggage, confirm the vehicle size too. This matters for taxis as well: comparing a tiny car with one that actually fits your group and bags tells you very little.

When to consider renting a car

A car is useful if you like changing plans as the day goes on: staying longer at the beach, stopping at a shop or trying a different cafe. Each extra stop doesn't require another ride booking. Finding a legal parking spot is still your job, though.

For families, the decision isn't just about price. Think about how often you'll be moving a pushchair, bags and children's things between vehicles. Check the usable space with the child seat installed and luggage loaded; a vehicle class name alone isn't enough.

At Sunny Rentals, a child seat is free on advance request. Tell us your child's age, height and weight so we can confirm the suitable type, installation and availability along with the car.

A busy itinerary doesn't have to become an endurance event. You don't need to add a third beach just to “get your money's worth” from the car. Holidays can develop an alarmingly ambitious to-do list all by themselves.

Count the whole route, not one ride

A beach trip usually involves at least two legs. Add a cafe and a supermarket, and you have more. That is why the price of one taxi ride isn't a fair comparison with a full day's car rental.

For each active day, write down:

  • where you're starting and going;
  • which stops you need;
  • where and roughly when you'll head back;
  • how many passengers and bags you have;
  • whether you're happy to drive that day.

Then collect indicative taxi quotes for the right vehicle size on every leg. Check what's included and any extra charges before booking. One quote helps estimate a particular journey; it doesn't lock in transport prices for your entire holiday.

Compare like this:

Rental = the charge for the full rental period + collection and return arrangements + fuel + parking + agreed paid extras.

Taxis = all outward and return rides + applicable surcharges + separate transfers, if needed.

If an excursion already includes a transfer you need, don't count it twice. And compare the cost for your whole group with the cost for your whole group: taxi fares aren't necessarily charged separately per passenger either.

What a week costs: examples by vehicle class

The rental prices in these examples apply to the low season. For high-season travel, recalculate the cost for your dates.

These seven-day calculations use our public fleet rate table as read on 18 October 2026, taking the low-season rates for rentals of 7–14 days. They are examples of published offers, not confirmation of availability or a final quote for your dates.

Airport handover is free with us. A handover at a hotel or villa in town costs 500 baht each way; collection and return are counted separately. The table includes two such handovers, totalling 1 000 baht. For other locations, recalculate that part and agree the full price.

For the Yaris example, that's 6 236 ÷ 7 ≈ 891 baht per day before fuel and parking. Compare 6 236 baht plus your other driving costs with the total taxi quotes for those same seven days. Now you have a useful reference for your own itinerary.

It isn't a break-even point yet: fuel and parking haven't been included. We won't fill the gaps with an imaginary mileage figure or parking charges we don't know.

Don't apply the lowest advertised rate to every rental length. For example, the published 517 baht per day for that same white Yaris applies to 30+ days in the low season, not a one-week trip. Confirm the season boundaries and total for your dates before paying.

The deposit is a separate part of your budget

A refundable deposit isn't added to the rental price as an inevitable expense, but you'll need that money available during the trip. For the weekly Yaris example, allow a separate 5 000-baht deposit in addition to the costs in the table.

We return the deposit after checking the vehicle for damage. Return the car with the same fuel level as at collection. Check the refund method and possible deductions in your agreement; our deposit guide explains more.

A booking prepayment is different again. In the high season, ours is 1 000 baht, non-refundable if the customer cancels. In the low season, we don't usually require a prepayment. Confirm the season and conditions for your dates before paying. Account for any prepayment in the agreed booking calculation, separately from the refundable deposit.

The insurance excess isn't the deposit either, nor is it a daily charge. Under our published terms, an identified other party to the accident is required for an insurance claim; parking damage without one isn't covered. These are the terms of our offer. Check the policy, exclusions and potential costs for the car you choose; start with our insurance terms.

You can rent just for your active days

If you plan to go exploring on three days out of seven, compare a full-week rental with a shorter rental plus taxis on the other days.

A shorter booking isn't necessarily cheaper in direct proportion. The daily rate may differ, and both handovers still need to be included. You can't simply multiply the weekly daily rate by two or three.

This approach leaves room for an actual holiday. Spend your first days by the sea, visit your planned spots later, then manage without a car again before flying home. The answer depends on the available rental period and agreed total, not how impressive the itinerary looks in your notes.

What to prepare before deciding

Start with your travel dates and times, the number of adults and children, luggage, accommodation address and a few main routes. Add any child-seat requirements and your preferred collection and return locations. Check documents and driving eligibility in our rental terms beforehand.

If the numbers and plans point towards a car, browse our fleet and choose your dates so we can confirm the vehicle and full price with you.
