What to see in Phuket by car: how to plan your route

With a car in Phuket, it makes sense to set aside one day for the southern beaches and viewpoints, and another for Old Town. For a first outing, we suggest a simple sequence: Karon Viewpoint → Nai Harn → Promthep Cape. If streets, architecture and cafes appeal more, start in Old Town and leave time to explore on foot.
Don't try to fit the whole island into one day. Three main stops, lunch and some breathing room give you a better chance to enjoy each place than a long checklist that keeps you rushing between pins on a map.
Choose the day's main experience first
Start with what you actually want from the outing: time by the sea, a walk around town or an evening at a viewpoint. Then add nearby stops. Your hotel's location matters too: getting to the first stop and returning afterwards are part of the day.
| Option | Suggested sequence | How to divide your time |
|---|---|---|
| Southern coast | Karon Viewpoint → Nai Harn → Promthep Cape | A short panoramic stop, a longer beach break, then the cape |
| A day in town | Thalang Road → Soi Rommani → Dibuk Road | One walking route with lunch and cafe breaks |
| Town and the south | Old Town → Nai Harn or Promthep Cape | Two main experiences; extra stops only if you still have time and energy |
These are ways to organise your stops, not a driving timetable. Before setting off, check a driving route from your own address, then check it again before the next leg.
A southern route: Karon, Nai Harn and Promthep
This option works if you want to alternate short walks with time by the sea. From Kata or Karon, you could start at the viewpoint. If you're staying farther south, reconsider the order rather than doubling back for a single photograph.
Karon Viewpoint. The view takes in three bays: Kata Noi, Kata and Karon. For planning purposes, we suggest allowing 20–30 minutes for the stop itself: get out, enjoy the panorama and take photographs. Allow separately for finding a parking space and walking from it.
Nai Harn. After a short viewpoint stop, leave room for a longer break: perhaps an hour and a half to two hours for a walk, some relaxation and lunch nearby. That's your chosen time allowance, not a required length of visit. If you want to stay longer, drop the next stop rather than cutting your beach break down to a few minutes.
Swimming doesn't have to be part of the plan. Follow the flags and lifeguards' instructions; don't enter the water when a red flag is flying. A walk and lunch can still make this a worthwhile stop.
Promthep Cape. You can leave this for the end of the outing. If you're going for sunset, check the sunset time for your actual date. Build in separate time for parking and walking to the viewpoint: reaching the cape by car is not the same as starting your walk.
Don't make a beautiful sunset a condition of a successful day. In rain or poor visibility, you can finish earlier. Think through the return to your hotel too, especially if you prefer to drive in daylight.
Old Town: park once and explore on foot
For a day in town, start on Thalang Road, turn into Soi Rommani and continue along Dibuk Road. The pleasure here is in the facade details, smaller streets and stops you choose along the way. You don't need to move the car between every point on this route.
We suggest allowing two to three hours for the walk, with lunch planned separately. That helps keep a visit to town from becoming a quick lap for a few photographs. If you want to visit a particular museum or cafe, check its opening hours separately: an accessible street doesn't mean every business is open.
Choose parking near the start of your walk in advance and save a backup option. Consider how you'll get back to the car after your final stop.
If you're planning an evening market, don't also make sunset at Promthep compulsory: both want the same part of your day. Choose where you'd like to spend the evening and plan around that decision.
Can you combine town and the beaches?
You could plan Old Town in the morning and one southern stop after lunch. But we wouldn't add several beaches, a temple and every viewpoint in succession. Even a brief visit takes time to turn off the main route, park and return to the car.
Use a simple calculation: the navigation app's driving time, plus visits, lunch and a buffer. For example, two hours walking around town and two hours at the beach already make four hours without a single drive. If the resulting day is longer than you want, remove the optional stops first.
If you're travelling with children or a group, agree on one main stop in advance. That makes it easier to change the plan if someone gets tired or wants more time by the sea.
What to check about the drive and parking
Before setting off, run through this short checklist:
- Set your navigation destination to the vehicle entrance or parking area, not just the attraction's name.
- Check the complete sequence of stops, including the return to your accommodation.
- For places with opening hours, look for current information from the attraction itself about hours and access.
- Check recent information about the approach and save a backup parking option. Treat photographs and reviews as clues, not guarantees.
- Read parking signs and conditions when you arrive. An empty roadside space isn't automatically a legal parking space.
- Update the route before your next drive. If time is running short, skip an extra stop.
Don't choose a car just by counting places on the map. First consider passengers and luggage, ease of getting in and out, and the vehicle's size when parking. You can compare suitable options in our car catalogue.
If you're travelling with a child, you can request a child seat from us free of charge in advance. Tell us your child's age, height and weight; the suitable type, installation and availability need to be confirmed along with the vehicle.
Before booking, it's also worth reading our rental terms so you can fit collection and return around your plans. Once you've settled on your passengers and a rough itinerary, choose your dates in the catalogue and compare suitable cars.
