Where to stay in Phuket for the winter: 7 areas to compare

For a week, you might choose an area mainly for its beach. For a few months, think about an ordinary Tuesday too: grocery shopping, work, walks and where you will park in the evening. At Sunny Rentals, we suggest working out your daily routine before choosing a particular address.
This guide compares seven areas from our shortlist. It is not a property ranking, and no neighbourhood suits everyone. Even nearby streets can differ in noise, access and how practical they are on foot.
A quick way to narrow your search
| What matters most | Areas to consider | Check before booking accommodation |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurants and evenings out nearby | Patong | Noise at the actual property and parking |
| Everyday errands rather than a beach at the door | Kathu, Chalong | Journeys to work, activities and your chosen beaches |
| A longer stay in the south | Rawai | Access to your preferred swimming beach and daily errands |
| A west-coast beach routine | Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao | The actual walk to the sea, shops and cafes |
Use this as a search aid, not a rule. Once you have found accommodation, compare the addresses rather than relying on the area names alone.
Patong: for restaurants and evenings out
Consider Patong if nearby restaurants, shops and evening plans matter more than having to cross the island for them. Staying in Patong does not have to mean staying beside a noisy street: investigate the particular location.
Worth considering if: you want an active setting and regularly go out in the evening.
Check first: noise after dark, access to the building and parking. If you plan to rent a car, ask to see where it will be parked rather than accepting a general promise of parking nearby.
Kathu: when the beach need not be on your doorstep
In this comparison, Kathu is an option for people who are prepared to travel separately to the sea and choose accommodation around everyday journeys. The area name is not a promise of easy access to every part of the island.
Worth considering if: you have specific daily destinations and do not expect to walk from home to the beach.
Check first: the addresses of your work, activities and shops, plus the route to your chosen beach. For families, the journey to a particular school or nursery matters more than a broad description of an area as family-friendly.

Rawai: for a base in the south
Consider Rawai alongside the southern places you actually plan to visit. Choose your accommodation and your swimming spot separately: a waterfront address does not mean your preferred swimming beach is at the door.
Worth considering if: you want a southern base for a longer stay and are happy to organise everyday travel around it.
Check first: access to the beach, groceries and your other regular destinations. If you will frequently travel to another part of the island, assess those journeys before paying for accommodation.
Chalong: for specific daily destinations in the south
Include Chalong in your search when your activities, work or other regular commitments are nearby. However, do not automatically treat Chalong Bay as an everyday swimming beach: the Tourism Authority of Thailand describes an active pier and a shoreline that is not well suited to swimming or sunbathing.
Worth considering if: you are choosing an address around a particular routine rather than a sea-view photograph alone.
Check first: journeys to your daily destinations and a separate route to a suitable beach. Do not assume a fixed journey time without checking the exact address and time of day.

Kamala: for a west-coast beach routine
Put Kamala on the shortlist if you picture days organised around the west coast and walks to the sea. But an area name does not guarantee walkability: a hillside property and a place near the shore are different choices.
Worth considering if: you want to choose accommodation around the beach and its immediate surroundings.
Check first: the actual walk, the climb back home and access to shops. Look at the route rather than just the straight-line distance on a map.
Surin: when this part of the coast appeals to you
Compare Surin with Kamala and Bang Tao using particular accommodation options and your own journeys. Do not assume a single budget level for the whole area or that every address will be equally convenient.
Worth considering if: you already like this part of the west coast and want to compare a few addresses.
Check first: everyday shopping, access to the property and parking. Compare the full accommodation cost, including the conditions in the particular agreement.
Bang Tao: for a base by a long beach
Bang Tao often appears on long-stay shortlists. Here, checking the map pin is especially useful: sharing an area name does not make two addresses neighbours.
Worth considering if: you want to organise everyday activities around this part of the island.
Check first: the distances between your home, the sea, shopping and activities. If some journeys will be by car, confirm parking at home and at your regular destinations in advance.
Check the neighbourhood before committing to a long stay
Take two or three addresses and assess the same things for each: a grocery shop, your work or activities, a chosen beach, parking and evening noise. Where possible, look at the surroundings at different times of day.
Ask the accommodation provider to confirm internet, utility charges and parking conditions. We do not quote housing prices here: they belong to a particular property, rental period and agreement, not an entire neighbourhood.
Will you need a car for your winter stay?
If most errands are within walking distance, you may need a car only for occasional trips. If every day involves shopping, activities and different beaches, compare rental with the actual cost of other transport options. A car is not automatically the cheapest answer for everyone.
For a longer visit, read our monthly car rental guide. Browse our car catalogue to find a suitable vehicle, then agree the total price, dates and handover locations before booking. The vehicle pages show real fleet photographs; the neighbourhood illustrations do not replace them.

For general orientation, see the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Phuket guide, the Phuket administration's beach guide and the description of Chalong Bay. These describe the destination; they do not verify the conditions of a particular property or our rental services.
